LOST Premier - Season 5

And just like that...I get sucked back in to watching yet another season of Lost.

The beginning was a complete waste of time with the people involved in the series talking about how great the show is and why everyone likes it. But what I did get from all that talking was that the series has aired for 4 seasons already. Wow...4 years. I can't believe it's been on for that long. I wikied it and found this piece of trivia: "The pilot episode was first broadcast on September 22, 2004."

It's one of the best shows on regular TV which is quite painful at times to watch, considering all of the really cheesy sitcoms, some TV shows that you never liked and yet won't seem to go away (ER anyone?), or bad reality TV. I mostly tune out network TV, or go to one of the cable channels for their shows (i.e., HBO, Showtime). I even stopped watching Lost for awhile, but then the writing started to get better, and I rented the DVD's to get caught up for Season 5.

This year I keep hearing that they focus on Sawyer. That would be great since they've placed him on the back burner and given him crumby lines - although his character is fascinating. The bad guy who you love to love, and who isn't really all that bad you think. Those episodes with him and Kate were the best. Okay I have to stop now, because it sounds like I'm caught up in a soap opera. Which I don't watch for the record. But everyone knows how great it is to watch a miniseries/drama and you really get into the characters and even forgive the writers when they write cheesy dialogue, and you just go with the story. That's how it feels with Lost. I'm just going with the story because it's so darn entertaining and sucks me in every time.

Californication Season 2

Californication is back for Season 2! Showtime Series on Sundays at 10 PM ET/PT. The entire 1st season is also available through On Demand in case you missed it. Highly recommend it.

It's shot in LA and is about a screenwriter Hank Moody, who moves to LA from NY after his novel gets picked up for a movie, and all the debauchery that takes place that ruins his relationship - while he's a very sweet, good guy underneath it all who is still in love with his ex girlfriend.
Hank Moody (played by David Duchovny)

Famed novelist & NYC transplant Hank relocates to LA after his acclaimed book is optioned, but it later becomes a crappy romantic comedy, which sparks a horrible case of writer's block. He's struggling to get his career back on track with the help of his agent/best friend, raise his pre-teen daughter, all while pining for his ex-girlfriend. It may sound desperate, but he enjoys life and owns all his various vices — drink, drugs and women — with a refreshing sense of honesty and unapologetic candor. He's holding it together while falling apart, and he doesn't mind it one bit.
Karen (played by Natascha McElhone)

Hank's long-time ex-girlfriend and the mother of his teenaged daughter. She was happy with struggling genius writer Hank when they lived in New York, but she can't begin to hide her disgust in L.A. Hank's inability to return to his promising craft and his immature, predictable behavior. Now that Hank is ghost writing the autobiography of a debaucherous famous record producer, how will she cope with Hank being surrounded on the daily by sex, drugs and rock & roll? Will her love/hate relationship with Hank jeopardize her sanity?

Mia (played by Madeline Zima)

This sexy siren upends Hank's life in a way he could never imagine. Their one-night stand after meeting at a bookstore sends Hank's life into a tailspin. How could he know the hot chick who liked his novel was the 16-year-old daughter of Karen's ex-boyfriend? While Hank tries to conceal their romp from Karen, Mia is off promoting the manuscript she stole from Hank and has passed off as her own. It's a huge hit and Mia is relishing in her new found, totally unearned fame. Will Karen discover their affair? Will the world discover the book was plagiarized? Will Mia stop Facebook-ing herself long enough to care?

Becca (played by Madeleine Martin)

Hank and Karen's thirteen-year-old daughter has seen it all — watching her parent's bad breakup and her father's once promising career take a hit has made her wise beyond her years. But, unlike her mother, Becca truly accepts her father for who he is. The women come and go, but Hank's heart truly belongs to his daughter. But Becca's heart is now facing a bit of competition — it's Dad versus her new boyfriend who, coincidentally, is the spitting image of a young Hank. Whether that will be a good or bad thing remains to be seen...

Charlie (played by Evan Handler)

Hank's best friend and agent lived life on the straight and narrow path and spent his free time trying to get Hank to kick his various habits and settle down with a good woman. But it all blew up — cataclysmically — in his face when an affair with his receptionist (among other peccadilloes) was caught on tape, earning him a pink slip and an uncertain future. A chance encounter lands him a new job as an agent to a budding porn star and a new Charlie is born. But his new star client's needs are proving a distraction from trouble brewing in his own home.Marcy (played by Pamela Adlon)

Marcy Runkle never minces words — she's a brash, hard core, unapologetic salon owner who loves her man above all. While Charlie plays it safe as a ten-percenter, Marcy is happy being way out in left field — they are the yin to each other's yang. But life stresses force old habits to re-emerge and Marcy hits a proverbial bump in the road. She trusts her husband unequivocally, but is too busy wrestling demons to notice how involved he has become with his hot new client.

The Amazing Race Season 13

The Amazing Race is one of my favorite shows on TV, and I'm looking forward to this new season #13. Show times on CBS Sundays 8:00pm ET/PT.

The show travels around the world showing the beauty and uniqueness of foreign countries and cultures, it's got the game element, it has the big brother reality TV component (how well do the teams work together under pressure?), and then there's the once in a lifetime factor that you get to experience with this group of people. Most of the couples even when eliminated will tear up and be thankful for the experience. And of course us viewers can go along for the ride sitting on our couches (and hopefully get motivated to travel and experience those things first hand).

What's the show about?
Eleven teams will compete in THE AMAZING RACE 13, traveling over 30,000 miles, spanning five continents, in 23 days, all starting from the world famous Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, site of the 1932 and 1984 Olympics.

The 13th installment will feature a variety of firsts, including: Teams traveling to a real-life water world where its inhabitants live upon a floating city; first time visits for the Race to locations such as Cambodia and Kazakhstan. The cast features couples in various stages of their lives - married beekeepers who have been together for years, a married but separated couple who is looking to rebuild their marriage, a newly dating couple who is still getting to know each other and best friends who are comic book aficionados and describe the Race as "the ultimate game on the biggest game board you can imagine.."

Whitney and the Robot

"Whitney and the Robot" was a Saturday morning children's program that aired from 1978 to 1979, about a robot named "4U2" who came from another planet, and lived with Whitney so that 4U2 could learn about Earth and Earthlings. The robot was discovered by Whitney, a cab driver. Along with Whitney's neighbor, Corky, a somewhat child-like adult, they undertook many adventures while learning about our earth and its people.

I was hoping that YouTube would have a video posted, but I only came across this photo. Dunno what reminded me of this show, but for whatever reason while driving one day a random memory of this show came to mind. One I hadn't thought of in years. I used to love watching this TV show as a kid.

Reading about Whitney Rydbeck, the actor who played Whitney - I was reminded that he's a gifted mime. I vaguely remember lots of brilliant miming going on, and my brother and I pretending to be mimes after watching each episode.

I also remember something about peanut butter sandwiches.

Does anyone else remember watching this show as a kid?

Bring On the Reality TV Shows!

Donny And Marie May Return To TV

Donny and Marie Osmond could be making their way back to television together on the heels of their recent association with ABC's "Dancing With the Stars."Sources have indicated that there's been interest from networks and syndicators in the pair, who previously starred in such series as the 1970s variety show "The Donny & Marie Show" and the late-'90s daytime talker "Donny & Marie."The talks revolve around hosting duties for reality series in primetime and a syndicated talk show for daytime, sources said. >>Read the rest of the story

Flawless

Wow. A perfect dance. Sabrina Bryan and Mark Ballas dance the Cha Cha in the season finale of Dancing With The Stars. I'm guessing they feel vindicated with this dance (even though they weren't competing in the finals).

Going back to when Sabrina Bryan and Mark Ballas got the boot, it was controversial since they were one of the best dancers (the judges loved them), but they failed to receive the number of votes they needed from the public resulting in the lowest overall score. Afterwards people questioned the voting elimination system. Did it need to be changed to ensure that the better dancers do in fact make it to the next round (due to their dancing performances and not JUST the number of popularity votes)?

Then you read Sabrina Bryan's bio:
Equally successful on screen and stage, Sabrina Bryan continues to demonstrate her creative versatility. Performing since she was seven years-old, Sabrina is currently a member of the multi-platinum recording act, The Cheetah Girls, as well as the star of the hugely successful Disney Channel movie franchise of the same name. Sabrina also starred in and co-produced a fitness-dance DVD called BYOU which was created so young girls can have fun learning cool, hip hop style dancing and get fit at the same time. BYOU was founded in early 2006 and has sold more than double-platinum. She is also co-writing the book Princess of Gossip for Pocket/MTV Books.

In case you didn't want to read all that
She's a professional dancer...

?
She definitely didn't deserve to be eliminated, but I question whether she should have even been allowed on the show as a contestant in the first place.

The Bachelor's most shocking final rose ceremony ever!

Did you watch the season finale of The Bachelor last night?

The exaggerated hook (so you'll stay tuned)
The host of the show always claims that what's coming up next will be
"...The most shocking ___fill in the blank___ ever!"
This claim is made so often in fact that it could be turned into a drinking game. Each time we hear it said (again!) we sigh, roll our eyes, and laugh when the show is at it's most ridiculous.

But last night really WAS the most shocking final rose ceremony ever!

Why do I keep watching?
Yes, I got sucked into watching a few episodes this season (season #11), which was sometimes painful and still a complete waste of time - but hey you can talk and laugh through the entire show - and with a glass of red wine in hand it's a nice way to end the day winding down with the spouse. (It also doesn't hurt that my husband likes the show more than I do.) And once in a blue moon you catch yourself smiling and hoping for true love. So says the romantic in me. And when there's a proposal at the end you wish the couple the best and hope they live happily ever after.

Jaws dropped all over TV land
After watching last night's season finale I thought, "Oh boy the blogs are gonna go berserk calling Brad Womack (the current Bachelor) a jerk" and sure enough - read this post by Celebrity Smack:
Brad Womack is a Jerk!!

Not only did he tell the 1st bachelorette finalist to go home, but while trying to tell the 2nd finalist that he loved her, he stopped, pulled at his collar, and looked like he was having a panic attack. After saying, "I can't" he walked off the podium, to pace around, only to return to tell her good-bye as well. Was he only on the show to become a B celebrity? I felt bad for the women who were humiliated on national TV. But of course we're all still talking about it. How could we not? Brad Womack made history as the first Bachelor to not choose either of the two finalists. As insensitive as it was, it also lived up to the hype of being the most shocking rose ceremony ever.

Quotable links
‘The Bachelor’s’ choice? Nobody!

'Bachelor' star Brad Womack rejects both Jenni Croft, DeAnna Pappas

Hopefully Brad Womack gets his ass beaten with a sock full of quarters by both of these vengeful ladies. Now that would be a surprise twist.

So glad The Amazing Race is back (12th Edition)

Best family show on network TV. You can watch this show with your grandparents, parents, spouse, child(ren), and friends. It's a race around the globe (this time traveling more than 30,000 miles from Ireland to Croatia in 28 days), a competition, a bonding experience (ripe for tension and meltdowns), a travel show, and a game show all in one.

Here are a few of my favorite teams this season:Ronald & Christina
(Gotta love the "Who's your Daddy" shirt.)

"A father/daughter team who are competing in the race to make up for lost time. Since Ronald was constantly traveling for work throughout much of his daughter's formative years, Christina hopes the Race will allow her father--a self-proclaimed workaholic--to stop and smell the roses and provide them with some meaningful time together."
Jennifer & Nathan
(Couple to provide best entertainment value with all their fighting.)

"This couple first met in college while living together with other friends. Both admit they couldn't stand each other at first, but soon grew closer and started dating. They've broken up several times in their two-year courtship (Nathan even admits to cheating with another woman), but remain true to each other. In one breath each will tell you that the other is their soul-mate and in the next, they'll tell you how much the other drives them crazy."
Kynt & Vyxsin
(Every reality show needs a goth couple.)

"These best friends have been dating on and off for over three years. Both are active in their local scene, regularly hosting and acting as emcee at rock shows and club nights. Between the two of them they've collectively had their hair dyed 18 different colors. The most difficult part of the race will undoubtedly be keeping up their daily make up routine."

I'm rooting for James, the gravedigger (Survivor, China)

He secured my vote when he shouted out, "B*tch!* in response to Jean-Robert yapping in his ear reminding everyone of their itchy bug bites on their backs, (JR's strategy to unnerve his opponents), while balancing on a floating barrel leaking water. He works hard. He dominates the game. He's a nice, shy guy with an unusual job. People respect him but underestimate him.
I hope it comes down to James and Todd (the flight attendant and puppet master) going head to head as the final two.

Where are they now? - Matthew Modine

Remember Mathew Modine? I started watching this season's Showtime series Weeds (a little behind on my TV viewing - it's hard to keep up with all the shows out there!), and saw this guy who looked really familiar. And then it hit me - he's the guy from Vision Quest (and Full Metal Jacket). Of course, it's Matthew Modine! As soon as I had my eureka moment (thank you imdb.com), I tried to parlay it to my husband: "Remember Vision Quest? That 80's movie about a high school wrestler in love with an older woman? Madonna was in it and so was her music."

I remember it well since my brother was a wrestler and had this movie playing as a constant mantra in his bedroom during wrestling season. It was also memorable because Madonna made her first film appearance in this movie as a singer in a bar. Who wasn't into Madonna back in 1985 when the movie came out?

My husband never saw the movie. So I sounded like a complete nut describing this flick. Wrestling movie? Love story? Madonna? Huh? But I'm sure there are others out there that remember it.

If you went to a school dance back in the mid 80's, chances are you slow danced to "Crazy for you."

On Weeds, Matthew Modine plays a creepy but funny, and somehow irresistible character. (The story line of him pursuing the Celia Hodes character makes both characters more believable. And I thought it was the sweetest/sexiest/most intimate gesture when he reached down and touched her ankle to buckle her high heel strap.) Is it just me or does his hair look like it's been fried? (Too much peroxide over the years?) He's aged a lot, but that's to be expected since it's been well over 20 years since he starred in Vision Quest.

I think I may have gotten my husband addicted to TLC

When I told him I was staying up late at night watching documentaries on TLC he called me crazy.

When he watched the TLC documentary series "John and Kate plus 8" about a couple that started with twins and wanted just one more child, but ended up having sextuplets; he said he found the couple to be annoying.
When we watched "Kids by the dozen" about families with 12 or more kids; he said those people were 'crazy' but admitted it had some entertainment value.

When we watched the series about a dwarf family "Little People, Big World", he said it was okay but he wouldn't go out of his way to watch it.

That all changed last night, while watching "Inside Brookhaven Obesity Clinic Cheats, Lies and Videotapes."

I think I had him at "man mountain". His eyes were as big as saucers when he saw the $7,000 custom wheelchair the size of a loveseat that had to be ordered for one patient with a 5 foot waist (since their extra wide wheelchairs were still too small for him). He couldn't believe his eyes when he saw the man being wheeled down the hallway in a couch/wheelchair being pushed by two people; the same man who doesn't think he has a problem. But the kicker was when we saw a clip of someone having to literally pull up mounds of stomach rolls to show the doctor what was on their lap. I think the wine may have shot out of his nose at that point.

The clinic was full of a bunch of characters, and it was funny and heartbreaking to watch them either denying or acknowledging they have a problem.

Tonight we're watching "Crazy Sexy Cancer," an irreverent and uplifting documentary about a young woman diagnosed with a rare and incurable cancer who finds her life-in strength, humor, friendship, even love-while searching for a cure.

He's so in.

Julianne Hough and Helio Castroneves dancing the Mambo (Week 2 of Season 5)

Their enthusiasm is contagious. Makes you want to sign up for a ballroom dancing class.

Julianne Hough is still the master of choreography

Julianne Hough and Helio Castroneves (2 time Indy 500 Champion) dancing the Foxtrot, Week 1 of season 5.

Julianne's dances are so much fun to watch.

Former Bond girl Jane Seymour dances the Foxtrot

Jane Seymour, age 56 is the oldest female contestant to appear on Dancing with the Stars. In this video clip she's dancing the Foxtrot to "Let's fall in love." She looks great!

Jane dreamed of becoming a professional ballerina until she had an injury at age 16. You can tell from her dancing that she has a ballet background. She's very graceful.

Sadly her mom died after the 2nd show, so she took a break from the show to attend the funeral and mourn and then she trained hard for her next dance, the Tango, and dedicated the dance to her mom.

I haven't been watching this season, but I've searched for clips on Youtube just to check out the new round of contestants (i.e., Wayne Newton, Marie Osmond, Melanie B. aka Scary Spice) just for curiosity sake.

Funny stuff - another show I have to watch (Flight of the Conchords)

This clip from "Flight of the Conchords," a series on HBO, had me cracking up.

I have the entire first season just waiting for me, and I can't wait to watch it. (My husband also heard good things about the show and was recording it all along.) Hope the show is as funny as this clip.

Have you been watching TLC lately?

The TLC channel used to be known for their "baby stories", but now they've got a whole new slew of documentaries.

I heart documentaries. So when I found myself with no new documentaries to watch, (having seen every single documentary on "On Demand"), I happened to end up on TLC while channel flipping. Lo and behold documentaries galore!

So far I've seen the following documentaries on TLC:
  • World's heaviest man (pictured above)
  • World's tallest woman
  • A family of dwarfs
  • Families by the dozen (yes 12+ kids!)
  • Morbidly obese people
  • A woman born with only half a body who gave birth to a perfectly healthy baby.
  • Bree Walker & her 2 children - (all born with ectrodactyly, a rare congenital deformity where your fingers and toes are fused together).
And then there's "LA Ink" (the reality series about an LA tattoo parlor) which I saw a couple episodes of.

I've been hooked ever since.

Life after the reality show ends

This interesting article in New York Magazine features interviews with reality TV celebrities about how their 15 minutes of fame affected their lives.

For instance - Jay McCarroll, winner of Project Runway, Season One - ran off to New York as soon as the show ended anticipating multiple offers to finance his clothing line, but that didn't happen and he's been homeless for the past 2 years. (Read more below.)
---------------------------------------------------
The Near-Fame Experience
With shows like Project Runway and Top Chef, the Bravo cable channel skillfully packages the fantasy that gifted amateurs can break into the big time. But make no mistake: It is a fantasy.
By Jennifer Senior
Jay McCarroll, winner of Project Runway, Season One.
(Photo: Jessica Wynne)

Jay McCarroll, baby-faced and hoodie-clad, works in the sort of space you’d expect from a fellow who dreams in fabric. It’s outfitted with four sewing machines and oceans of material arranged in brilliant spectral sequence; his spring 2007 collection hangs on a rack in the corner, anchored by a quilt skirt so audaciously outsize it could easily double as a bedspread. But bedding itself is missing from this studio, as is a kitchen and a shower, which matters more in this case than it ordinarily would: Though he’s the first- season winner of Project Runway, Jay, 32, is still homeless in New York.

“I haven’t been living anywhere for two years,” he says. “I sleep at other people’s houses. I sleep here if I’m drunk.”

Jay was one of the Bravo network’s first guinea pigs in the competition reality genre, a brightly imaginative new form that mixes the more mundane conceits of The Real World and Survivor with contests involving genuine skill. In exchange for a few weeks of reality-style exploitation, contestants have a chance to show the world what they can do—with a sewing machine, with a pair of scissors, in a kitchen, in an undecorated room—and in the aftermath find their careers in full bloom. But the shows, it turns out, are the easy part. “I have a fucking gazillion e-mails from all over the world from people asking, Why isn’t your stuff out there?” says Jay. “Yet financially, I have no way to get them a product because I got pushed out of a boat and into the ocean, as if, Oh, you can survive now.”

This isn’t what one would assume, of course. One would assume he’d be a money magnet after his star turn. Certainly Jay assumed as much. “You don’t think I took the fucking bus to New York the day after I won the show, thinking someone was going to come up to me on the street and say, You’re awesome, here’s money?” he asks. “I thought that for two years. But I’ve given up on that.”

Had Bravo not invented Project Runway, Jay would probably still be back in Lehman, Pennsylvania, where he ran a vintage-clothing store (before that, he was producing online porn). But because of the show, Bravo and Bravo watchers expected quite a bit more from him. Project Runway wasn’t some competition gimmick like Fear Factor or The Amazing Race, where the contestants’ skills only served the needs of the show. Jay’s talents were practical and real, and Bravo gave him a platform to showcase them. If he couldn’t succeed in the aftermath, why were we watching? Of what use was the show?

That’s pretty much how Jay saw it, too. He’d worked for five straight months, with zero pay and little sleep, to appear on Project Runway and create a collection for Bryant Park. Audiences adored him. The show owed much of its success, let’s face it, to him. So what did Jay get out of it?

The trouble is, celebrity came easily to Jay. Business did not. On the show, Jay was wicked and entertaining and cheerfully provocative, but he hardly had the means, savvy, or professional temperament to navigate the New York fashion world. (His first voice-mail message to me, ever: Hey Jen, this is Jay McCarroll … Um, I am free tonight and all day tomorrow to do this bullshit. Fucking call me, would you?) “A week after I won the show, I met with two ladies from Banana Republic at the top of the Soho House, which is like, big time,” he says. “And they were like, ‘Oh, we can give you numbers for factories to get your clothes produced.’ But that was totally not anything like what I needed. What I needed was someone to sit down with me and say, Here’s how you start a fashion label.”

Before long, the blogs started to howl that Jay’s work was nowhere to be seen, and Tim Gunn, the kindly host and soul of Project Runway, was wondering aloud to the press why Jay hadn’t gained more momentum; he also castigated him for being a diva.

“My hands have been creatively crippled for two years—all those fucking eyes on me, reading that I’m a waste on blogs,” he says. He looks genuinely unhappy now, and younger than his 32 years—a reminder that there’s an enfant in enfant terrible, a person one feels just as apt to protect as to throttle. “I was just an artist before this happened,” he adds. “Now I’m an artist with a fucking clock ticking.”

Jodie Sweetin (the cute girl from "Full House") is all grown up

We hear so much about the Olsen twins and all of their problems (eating disorders and boys), that you almost forget there was another little girl Jody Sweetin (who played the middle sister in the TV sitcom "Full House" (as well as Candace Cameron who played the oldest sister).

Jodie, who's 25 now, popped back onto my radar when I saw a recent (really bad) photo of her on awfulplasticsurgery.com, (a guilty pleasure of mine) with an armpit scar from a botched boob job. I was sad to read that she's had a really hard time since the show ended. She's been married twice (the first time at age 20) and had a crystal meth addiction. She's quoted as saying, "It is kind of hard to figure out who you are when you've lost your job at age 13, when that was basically how you identified yourself."

She appeared on "Good Morning America"on February 1, 2006 to talk about her two year addiction to meth.

"I get recognized all the time, although people are like, 'Oh my gosh, you're not, like, 11 any more!' It's funny. People don't expect you to grow up."

I wouldn't have recognized her at all. She looks completely different as a grown woman.A photo of all the "Full House" girls all grown up.

Damages - a new FX series starring Glenn Close

I finally watched the season premiere of "Damages" that I've been hearing so much about. (I recorded it on Tuesday.) Let me just say - this was the most suspenseful TV I've seen in a LONG time. I was on the edge of my seat - I mean couch - and was impressed with the creative writing with it's twists and turns. For a show that starts at 10 PM, it's worth staying up for. Even my husband who usually falls asleep midway through shows after an exhausting day at the office stayed awake. It's not predictable, formula TV - I had no idea what would happen next which kept me on my TV viewing toes.

Cadillac sponsored the premiere episode so the entire 1st episode was shown commercial free. Pretty cool. They had Glen Close standing with a Cadillac at the end talking about her sponsor, but it wasn't overkill.

At 60, Glenn Close is really hitting her stride with this performance. She plays this role with a lot of depth like a movie actress, not a TV actress and her character is multifaceted and intriguing.

Here's the promo on YouTube.

Other Reviews
Los Angeles Times describes Glenn Close as playing "the most beautifully vicious and complicated woman on any screen since Bette Davis stopped making movies."

Advertising Age's review titled, "FX Lets Glenn Close Loose in 'Damages'" describes the show as promising to be "a pretty heady ride -- from the opening scene of a bloody, terrified Ellen Parsons running in the street to the sound of 'White Stripes' very appropriate song "I Think I Smell A Rat" at the end. "

Showtime
FX Channel - Tuesdays at 10 p.m. for 13 weeks.

Description Of The Show
A legal thriller.
"The Devil Meets Prada" with a legal twist.

Will I Tune In Next Week?
Absolutely.
