As Tears Go By
Heartfelt favorite of mine. How the world can continue to go on as usual while my loved one is dying is something I'm grappling with.

Great Depression Cooking with Clara
Clara Cannucciari a 93 year old grandmother in upstate New York has become the latest YouTube sensation after her grandson filmed her making meals that her family ate during the Great Depression.
In this video Clara cooks what she calls “the three-course Poorman’s Feast,” which includes salad and lentils, rice and a little bit of meat cooked in lemon and oil.
Part of her appeal is of course that in these times of financial troubles people are doing whatever they can to stretch their dollar. But I enjoy it because they're simple meals with simple ingredients that are easy to replicate. As an added bonus, while the food is cooking, Clara sits down on the couch and shares stories of her life during the depression. It's like spending time with your grandmother while she cooks. Something very endearing about that.

I Am a Rock - Simon & Garfunkel
I heard this song on XM radio today on the drive home. It's a song I've heard dozens of times before, and only today did I really listen and relate to the lyrics.

Nothing Compares 2 U - by The Coconutz
I caught this flick, "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" on a recent flight back from Europe. It's a cute movie with a good soundtrack. At the end of the movie there's this version of Sinead O'Connor's - "Nothing Compares to you," by The Coconutz. Check it out - a haunting rendition entirely in Hawaiian.

Always look on the bright side of life
When U. went to Germany in August, the Dollar to Euro conversion rate was ridiculously painful (for us 'Mericans'). But with Europe's economy having it's own financial crisis now, it makes our upcoming vacation to Europe a much sweeter deal - 30% cheaper and still going.

For my grieving loved one
A hug sent to you via a melancholy Joni Mitchell song that makes my heart ache each time I hear it, and I can only imagine the sadness that you feel and all the memories of the past that you're dealing with.

MGMT - Time To Pretend @ Coachella 2008
I heard this song on the radio today during my morning commute and it made me think of Coachella. Every year that darn festival goes by WAY too fast. Wishing I was back there again.

Growing up without turning into Annette Bening's character from American Beauty
It's funny how life works. For years you think in terms of "when I grow up" and then one day you suddenly realize you're all grown up when your husband remarks, "That's all good, but just make sure you don't turn into the Annette Bening character from American Beauty."
Who can forget that unforgettable slapping scene where Annette Bening's character Caryoln, the suburban wife, mother and real estate agent is trying to sell that crappy house, and behind closed vertical mini blinds her keeping-up-appearances crumbles and she loses it and starts slapping her face hysterically, telling herself she is weak?
For the first time in my life my compensation is enough to support my husband and family. Just me alone. Who would have thought? It wasn't too long ago that my husband supported me so I could take a year sabbatical to teach, and then stay home with our daughter. Now that U. has started his own company, I'm happy to be able to do the same for him to support his dreams and aspirations.
My rising star and ambition is great as long as I have balance in my life, but I don't ever want my husband smoking out in the garage having a mid life crisis (fantasizing about working as a fast food clerk) while all I'm concerned about is my next commission. It's important that we're both not so caught up in the rat race that we forget about what's really important to us.
So on our date night tonight, after dinner and drinks - we did something a bit out of the ordinary - something we haven't done since we were kids. We went to our local neighborhood carnival in Cypress Park for Cinco de Mayo and rode the Super Slide. Seeing my husband's big smile as he sat on his blanket, gliding down that long slide was priceless.
Yes, honey I'll always try to remember your comment about not turning into Annette Bening's character from American Beauty. That was a pearl of wisdom I'll try and live by.

Tegan and Sara
Tegan and Sara have a unique sound of of vocals, guitar, keyboard and synthesizer that's perfect for an outdoor Coachella music festival. Of all the bands I saw at Coachella this year, they're the ones I most enjoyed sitting on the grass, listening to, on a beautiful hot day in the desert sun. They've got great songs and I could listen to them for hours. The band consists of Canadian singer-songwriters Tegan Rain Quin and Sara Kiersten Quin, who are identical twin sisters.
Below are a couple songs that I really enjoyed live. Today when I heard their music (U. was playing it on his ipod) I had a flashback and I could almost smell the Coachella grass.
Tegan and Sara - "The Con"
Tegan and Sara - "Back in your head"

Food Fight
An abridged history of American-centric warfare, from WWII to present day, told through the foods of the countries in conflict.
The pretzel and bratwurst were pretty obvious, but I have to admit I didn't get the cracker "matzah" until I looked it up. Duh! The beef stroganoff working with the kimchee, springrolls, and Cuban sandwich was classic.

Happy Valentine's Day Honey! (I've got you under my skin)
Frank Sinatra - "I've got you under my skin"
Diana Krall - "I've got you under my skin"
From seeing Diana Krall perform at the Hollywood Bowl together years ago (sushi, wine, and falling asleep on your shoulder, under the stars while Tony Bennett was singing), to the Frank Sinatra crooner in Arizona who sang this song for us and asked us if we were having an affair - this song always makes me think of you. (And not just on Valentine's Day.) Love you!

Beyond the Sea (La Mer) - A song fitting for a rainy week in Los Angeles
The original French version "La Mer" (written in 1945), performed live by Charles Trenet, with English subtitles. Such a beautiful, poetic song.
Bobby Darin's 1960 hit and English/swing version, "Beyond the Sea".
For LOST fans, this video combines the French and English versions. "Somewhere beyond the sea...there is an island."

"Space...the final frontier" - Star Trek XI Teaser
The new Star Trek movie is being directed by J.J. Abrams (of LOST fame) and is due out Christmas of 2008. The teaser doesn't give away much other than the ship will be called "Enterprise." But I'm still intrigued.

Let Your Love Flow
The Bellamy Brothers singing "Let Your Love Flow" on German TV in the 1970s.
When I hear this song I think of sunshine, the orange mints at the bottom of my mom's crocheted purse back in the 70's, and long healthy hippy hair parted down the middle. It also reminds me of the coming of age movie "Little Darlings" my mom talked to be about to warn me about losing my virginity. Ha. A true blast from the past.

Another reason to visit Japan
The Silver Beats, a Japanese Beatles tribute band from the Cavern Club in Tokyo. The one guy really looks like John Lennon. He's Japanese and John Lennon was Caucasian, but whatever, it works.
