Frances Bean Cobain at 15 (Harper's Bazaar)

Frances Bean Cobain, 15, the daughter of Courtney Love and late grunge legend Kurt Cobain, graces the March issue of Harper's Bazaar, including a photo-spread for the magazine as Evita, and characters from Grease, and Beauty and the Beast. About Frances
Frances is disarmingly direct, dispensing bons mots like a 17th-century raconteur. (This may explain why the French period drama Molière is her current favorite movie.)

She's implicitly aware that this interview—with no hovering minders, no publicists, no Mom—represents something of a coming-out party. And she is dressed for the occasion in a sparkly red J. Maskrey cardigan, a navy tank, and a black American Apparel skirt. She recently dyed her hair black, accenting the look with more red lipstick, red fingernails, and — mais oui — red toenails. She has a brand-new nose piercing, too. "Mom went with me. She was freaking out because she thought it was going to be a big stud or a big ring," she says. "And, God, it hurt. It was worth it, though, because it looks so cool."

Her Genes (& her father's eyes)
But it's Frances's eyes that have it: Huge pools of "like green, blue, yellow, purple, orange, gray," they are startlingly and immediately reminiscent of her late father, Kurt Cobain. They are inescapable. "I'm very lucky because my eyes work with almost any hair color," Frances notes breezily. "Thanks for the genetics, parents. Rock on!"

Frances talks about being a child of famous parents
“These people are fascinated by me, but I haven’t done anything,” she says. “If you’re a big Nirvana fan, a big Hole fan, then I understand why you would want to get to know me, but I’m not my parents.”

Without dismissing the accomplishments of her folks (her father was dead before she was 2), Cobain advises, “People need to wait until I’ve done something valid with my life.” When asked if she planned to follow in her mother and father’s footsteps and go into music, Frances said she thought about photography and/or journalism, and might do a summer internship at Rolling Stone.

Courtney Love on her daughter
"Whatever you want to say about me, go look at my kid. ... I don't think any child has ever been more wanted. And I don't think that any parents have wanted to fuck up less."

The Loves of Frances Bean the Teenager
These days, Frances is getting on with the business of being a teenager. Picking up her Sex and the City DVD, she grins. "I am pretty much a shoe junkie. Think Carrie Bradshaw times 20. It's not even cute; it's sick."

She adores the style of Dita Von Teese. "She's like a very dark, gothic, beautiful burlesque doll. Oh, hey, want to see what I bought on eBay?" She runs to her room, returning with a curvy Dita-esque vintage purple dress. "It looks amazing on. I'm not gonna lie."

What does Frances aspire to be?
"I want to be sublimely happy. I want to be able to live in a way that isn't too hectic. Calm. And I want those around me to be sublimely happy as well.

"But," she continues, her big green-blue-yellow-purple-orange-gray eyes widening, "I'm really scared to hit adulthood because if everything is this hectic and I'm only 15 years old, what the hell is going to happen when I'm 22?"

The Sexiest Man Alive in 2007 (according to People Magazine) *Revised*

People Magazine came out with their “Sexiest Men Alive” 2007 edition today, and this year's winner is...Matt Damon. *Yawn*

Former winners include: George Clooney (2006 & 1997), Matthew McConaughey (2005), and Jude Law (2004).

Also on People's list of sexy men this year are Patrick Dempsey, Ryan Reynolds, Brad Pitt, James McAvoy, Johnny Depp, Dave Annable, Will Smith, Javier Bardem, Shemar Moore, Ben Affleck, Adrian Grenier, Will Yun Lee and Justin Timberlake.

My Sexy List U. (A reality star crush of mine.)

Christian Bale (Batman, American Psycho) James Franco ("Freaks and Geeks", James Dean, Tristan + Isolde) Peter Facinelli (Yes, Jennie Garth's husband. He was perfect for the role of Gregory Malina in the FX series "Damages".) James McAvoy (He’s the only one to appear on People’s list. He played the doctor in The Last King of Scotland. He also stars opposite Christina Ricci in Penelope, the modern day fairytale.) Heath Ledger (Lords of Dogtown, Brokeback Mountain)
Julian McMahon (He plays Dr. Christian Troy on "Nip/Tuck".)
Josh Holloway (He plays Sawyer on the TV series "Lost".)
David Duchovny (Have you been watching the Showtime hit series "Californication"? It's one of the best shows on television. Duchovny’s portrayal of Hank Moody, a down and out, but brilliant writer – think Charles Bukowski but better looking and loves women – is truly beautiful. You can’t help but fall in love with his character.) Ryan Gosling (The Notebook - need I say more?)

Where are they now? - Matthew Modine

Remember Mathew Modine? I started watching this season's Showtime series Weeds (a little behind on my TV viewing - it's hard to keep up with all the shows out there!), and saw this guy who looked really familiar. And then it hit me - he's the guy from Vision Quest (and Full Metal Jacket). Of course, it's Matthew Modine! As soon as I had my eureka moment (thank you imdb.com), I tried to parlay it to my husband: "Remember Vision Quest? That 80's movie about a high school wrestler in love with an older woman? Madonna was in it and so was her music."

I remember it well since my brother was a wrestler and had this movie playing as a constant mantra in his bedroom during wrestling season. It was also memorable because Madonna made her first film appearance in this movie as a singer in a bar. Who wasn't into Madonna back in 1985 when the movie came out?

My husband never saw the movie. So I sounded like a complete nut describing this flick. Wrestling movie? Love story? Madonna? Huh? But I'm sure there are others out there that remember it.

If you went to a school dance back in the mid 80's, chances are you slow danced to "Crazy for you."

On Weeds, Matthew Modine plays a creepy but funny, and somehow irresistible character. (The story line of him pursuing the Celia Hodes character makes both characters more believable. And I thought it was the sweetest/sexiest/most intimate gesture when he reached down and touched her ankle to buckle her high heel strap.) Is it just me or does his hair look like it's been fried? (Too much peroxide over the years?) He's aged a lot, but that's to be expected since it's been well over 20 years since he starred in Vision Quest.

The Plimsouls - A Million Miles Away (Valley Girl - 1983)

This is a video clip of the club scene from the 1983 movie "Valley Girl" featuring the pop band The Plimsouls playing two of their songs, "Oldest Story in the World" and "A Million Miles Away".

Check out the young Nicolas Cage as he and his Valley Girl crush "Julie" discuss the underground Hollywood scene vs. the cookie cutter Valley.

Does anyone remember the side story involving Suzi and her stepmom vying for the attention of Skip the grocery delivery boy? And Julie's pot smoking, hippy parents? Classic.

Life after the reality show ends

This interesting article in New York Magazine features interviews with reality TV celebrities about how their 15 minutes of fame affected their lives.

For instance - Jay McCarroll, winner of Project Runway, Season One - ran off to New York as soon as the show ended anticipating multiple offers to finance his clothing line, but that didn't happen and he's been homeless for the past 2 years. (Read more below.)
---------------------------------------------------
The Near-Fame Experience
With shows like Project Runway and Top Chef, the Bravo cable channel skillfully packages the fantasy that gifted amateurs can break into the big time. But make no mistake: It is a fantasy.
By Jennifer Senior

Jay McCarroll, baby-faced and hoodie-clad, works in the sort of space you’d expect from a fellow who dreams in fabric. It’s outfitted with four sewing machines and oceans of material arranged in brilliant spectral sequence; his spring 2007 collection hangs on a rack in the corner, anchored by a quilt skirt so audaciously outsize it could easily double as a bedspread. But bedding itself is missing from this studio, as is a kitchen and a shower, which matters more in this case than it ordinarily would: Though he’s the first- season winner of Project Runway, Jay, 32, is still homeless in New York.

“I haven’t been living anywhere for two years,” he says. “I sleep at other people’s houses. I sleep here if I’m drunk.”

Jay was one of the Bravo network’s first guinea pigs in the competition reality genre, a brightly imaginative new form that mixes the more mundane conceits of The Real World and Survivor with contests involving genuine skill. In exchange for a few weeks of reality-style exploitation, contestants have a chance to show the world what they can do—with a sewing machine, with a pair of scissors, in a kitchen, in an undecorated room—and in the aftermath find their careers in full bloom. But the shows, it turns out, are the easy part. “I have a fucking gazillion e-mails from all over the world from people asking, Why isn’t your stuff out there?” says Jay. “Yet financially, I have no way to get them a product because I got pushed out of a boat and into the ocean, as if, Oh, you can survive now.”

This isn’t what one would assume, of course. One would assume he’d be a money magnet after his star turn. Certainly Jay assumed as much. “You don’t think I took the fucking bus to New York the day after I won the show, thinking someone was going to come up to me on the street and say, You’re awesome, here’s money?” he asks. “I thought that for two years. But I’ve given up on that.”

Had Bravo not invented Project Runway, Jay would probably still be back in Lehman, Pennsylvania, where he ran a vintage-clothing store (before that, he was producing online porn). But because of the show, Bravo and Bravo watchers expected quite a bit more from him. Project Runway wasn’t some competition gimmick like Fear Factor or The Amazing Race, where the contestants’ skills only served the needs of the show. Jay’s talents were practical and real, and Bravo gave him a platform to showcase them. If he couldn’t succeed in the aftermath, why were we watching? Of what use was the show?

That’s pretty much how Jay saw it, too. He’d worked for five straight months, with zero pay and little sleep, to appear on Project Runway and create a collection for Bryant Park. Audiences adored him. The show owed much of its success, let’s face it, to him. So what did Jay get out of it?

The trouble is, celebrity came easily to Jay. Business did not. On the show, Jay was wicked and entertaining and cheerfully provocative, but he hardly had the means, savvy, or professional temperament to navigate the New York fashion world. (His first voice-mail message to me, ever: Hey Jen, this is Jay McCarroll … Um, I am free tonight and all day tomorrow to do this bullshit. Fucking call me, would you?) “A week after I won the show, I met with two ladies from Banana Republic at the top of the Soho House, which is like, big time,” he says. “And they were like, ‘Oh, we can give you numbers for factories to get your clothes produced.’ But that was totally not anything like what I needed. What I needed was someone to sit down with me and say, Here’s how you start a fashion label.”

Before long, the blogs started to howl that Jay’s work was nowhere to be seen, and Tim Gunn, the kindly host and soul of Project Runway, was wondering aloud to the press why Jay hadn’t gained more momentum; he also castigated him for being a diva.

“My hands have been creatively crippled for two years—all those fucking eyes on me, reading that I’m a waste on blogs,” he says. He looks genuinely unhappy now, and younger than his 32 years—a reminder that there’s an enfant in enfant terrible, a person one feels just as apt to protect as to throttle. “I was just an artist before this happened,” he adds. “Now I’m an artist with a fucking clock ticking.”

Jodie Sweetin (the cute girl from "Full House") is all grown up

We hear so much about the Olsen twins and all of their problems (eating disorders and boys), that you almost forget there was another little girl Jody Sweetin (who played the middle sister in the TV sitcom "Full House" (as well as Candace Cameron who played the oldest sister).

Jodie, who's 25 now, popped back onto my radar when I saw a recent (really bad) photo of her on awfulplasticsurgery.com, (a guilty pleasure of mine) with an armpit scar from a botched boob job. I was sad to read that she's had a really hard time since the show ended. She's been married twice (the first time at age 20) and had a crystal meth addiction. She's quoted as saying, "It is kind of hard to figure out who you are when you've lost your job at age 13, when that was basically how you identified yourself."

She appeared on "Good Morning America"on February 1, 2006 to talk about her two year addiction to meth.

"I get recognized all the time, although people are like, 'Oh my gosh, you're not, like, 11 any more!' It's funny. People don't expect you to grow up."

I wouldn't have recognized her at all. She looks completely different as a grown woman.A photo of all the "Full House" girls all grown up.

Where are they now? - Lou Diamond Phillips

“This September, CAMELOT rises once again for a brief shining moment, high on the hill, at UCLA’s magnificent Royce Hall. If you find yourself longing for CAMELOT these days, make plans to relive one of Broadways’s most beloved musicals in a glorious new production starring Lou Diamond Phillips as Arthur the legendary king. Tony-nominated for his Broadway performance in The King and I, Phillips will wear the Crown in one of history’s greatest love stories.”

At first when I saw this e-mail announcement today, I thought it was a joke (i.e., photoshop). But then I realized it's legit coming from Broadway/LA. (I'm on their mailing list.) I had no idea that Lou Diamond Phillips has been doing musicals lately on Broadway. I knew he could sing, from La Bamba, but I never pictured him in musical theater. The last movie I saw him in was "The First Power" a horror movie, back in 1991. According to imdb.com, he's also currently shooting "Aquaman" the TV series, playing the role of Aquaman's father.

Britney Spears - Pepsi Commercial

Anyone remember this commercial? It features Britney Spears drinking Pepsi from the 1950's through 2000.

I'm guessing the 2007 reality version - bald with extensions, chain smoking, post rehab, out of shape, soon to be divorcee', with 2 kids (who is being investigated by childrens protective services) wouldn't sell as many soft drinks. Ya think?

Father's Day - Celebrity Children in 2032

I found this amusing video on Celebrity Smack. It's a futuristic look at celebrity children (Shiloh, Rocco, Sean & Suri) in the year 2032, created for Father's Day.

Over dinner last night Uwe and I were just discussing Tiger Woods, and how he and his wife are expecting their first child - and how we'll probably see that kid doing the whole messed up celebrity kid bit when he/she is older.

Star Magazine's - Best & Worst Beach Bodies

I couldn't help staring at the cover of the new Star magazine, featuring the best and worst celebrity beach bodies. Kate Hudson is super thin, and I know she said she gained 50 lbs when she was pregnant, and subsequently lost it rapidly for a movie she was shooting (with the help of a personal trainer). I get that. I get the not so perfect body. But why would you wear a bikini if you have a sagging belly? There is such a thing as a one piece bathing suit.
